Who is behind Fynbos
About us
A township project in Cape Town, a job as a cook, a trip that went differently than planned — over the years, this grew out of it.
How it started
The first connection to Africa came through a project in the townships of Cape Town. A few weeks turned into a bond that still holds today.
That same year came the request to work as a cook and interpreter for a company running tours through Africa. On the first trip of his own, from Cape Town to Johannesburg, circumstances turned that into guiding — and after that into being booked as lead guide on routes from Johannesburg to Tanzania.
Experience turned into a company
Founding it was a gradual process. Over the years, requests kept coming from people around him — anyone who spends that much time there, has worked in several countries and keeps a base in Cape Town eventually counts as the Africa expert. The honeymoon trip for his own brother came about this way.
At some point came the thought of bringing that knowledge together and making it visible — partly to mark out where the expertise really lies. Over the years that became the work with several guides and what we offer today.
Where the name comes from
Fynbos is the characteristic plant world of the southern Cape. Various shrubs, among them the better-known protea, and you see them on practically every walk around Cape Town. The word comes from Afrikaans.
There is hardly anything more closely tied to this region — unmistakable, unlike anything else.

The central point of contact for every enquiry. Plans every trip personally, usually starting with a phone call or video call. Works closely with the guides on the ground, including current conditions such as weather and the rainy season.
Gift
Guide, southern and eastern Africa
Met on the very first trip of our own. Warm, cheerful, with more than twenty years of experience and a guiding licence in almost every southern and eastern African country. On our first trip together in 2013 his father died during the journey — out of that grew a bond that holds to this day.
Tony
Guide, Tanzania
Met in Tanzania. A Tanzania specialist with more than fifteen years of experience, knows the Serengeti intimately. Quieter than Gift, open to new things.
Abdul
Guide, Zanzibar
A young guide on Zanzibar, full of life. Leads the spice tours and cooks together with travellers.
We give something back
Hope Cape Town was the very first connection in South Africa — work in the township clinic with HIV-positive children and at Tygerberg Hospital. There are regular visits to this day, and the project has grown noticeably over the years.
Hout Bay United Football Community joined in 2024, after we heard about the football project there — a good fit with a smaller project of our own that had been running in a township before. HBUFC is more professionally set up, sits right by the sea, and gives visitors an insight into both the football and the township world.
Anyone who wants to get involved takes a look on site and sees what is needed. That can turn into one-off or ongoing support — for instance around the children's schooling. Always in direct agreement with the project.
